October 9th, 2012

Presidents Message (Kelly Shera):
- Entertainment Books have almost all been returned. $7100 so far.
- Introductions around table
- Pizza Day notices have gone home – first one will be on Wednesday, October 31st
- Halloween committee - handed over to Joanne Buxton

Halloween Committee - Joanne Buxton:
- Alison Hoogland is not here but it is all under control to run on Friday, October 26th, 530-8pm
- Notice will be sent out for cupcakes to be donated for cupcake walk
- Students (high school) are going to be volunteers for evening - students will get 4 hours credit towards their
grad volunteer hours
- Concession will be at Studio One and Cupcake Walk will be in Library

Principals Message (Maryanne Trofimuk):
- Territorial Acknowledgement
- All emails have been entered into the group email - everything will be electronic this year

Growth Plan:
- This is presented at a meeting of all schools in district.
- Maryanne read out the statement which will go forward as our school’s growth plan. General feedback and additions
made.
- Goals for this year were read out, explained and discussed.

Traffic:
- once again is a major issue - no double parking on the round about
- Rogers cul-de-sac is becoming a hazard as well
- Maryanne asked parents to take initiative and say something if you see another parent blocking traffic

- Revision for Food and Beverage Guidelines for Schools - revisions read out in PAC meeting

- United Way Campaign - would PAC support a fundraiser, solely for the United Way? Maryanne asked for volunteers
to help arrange this

- Earthquake Committee - Julia Fellman is in charge. Asking for volunteers. Meeting date is set for Thursday,
October 25th @ 2:45pm - approximately 2hours

- Funding Wish List – Maryanne read out what the school has paid for, out of their own monies (eg: $10K for
level books Gr 1-5; $7K on 7 LCD projectors; speakers; Jump Math books; class set of desks for Nancy Game’s
class).
- Maryanne sent an email and ascertained that the monies for the PAC rebate will be coming in next week.
- There will be no chess lessons this year - Mr Churchill will be away and his available time did not liaise with the
teachers.

Funding Suggestions:
- Stage for the gym - Campus View is willing to share one with us $3362
- Wifi for the school - need parental and PAC approval - all middle and high schools have it now. Some research is
to be done to decide if this is a safe move for the students

Treasurers Message (Sanci Solbakken):
- Sanci explained how the funding request process works.
- Discussed budget. Should budget be amended – read through all lines and discussed.
Class funding raised to $200, decrease the Thrifty’s cards to $1000.

President’s Message (Kelly Shera):
- Kelly introduced the PAC Exec for this year
- Entertainment Books $30 (bonus for the kids: if two sold by 21st and hand in money - kid win a zoo stuffy)
- We need more Bottle Drive route captains
- Round table introductions
- Class Reps discussed

Principal’s Message (Maryanne Trofimuk):
- Thanked everyone for coming out - lots of people here for the first meeting
- Explained that everyone at the school belongs to the PAC - parents are welcome to attend meetings any time and are not
  pressured to volunteer - explained how fundraisers work for the school (eg) bottle drives, movie nights
- Maryanne read out a notice “Encouraging Parent Engagement in Your Child’s School”
- Open House on Thursday
- Newsletters are sent out via email - plus a weekly “what’s going on at Rogers this week”
- Explained split classes
- Enrolment is at 297 as of today
- September Calendar:
    - Pac meeting tonight

    - Fire Drills - 3 this month as a practice. First one on 14th
    - Bottle Drive - 15th
    - Pro D Day - 17th
    - Cross Country - notice will go out this week

- Traffic and Parking - please be careful in the circle and only for drop off

- Complaint Process Policy - all information is on the School Board website
- PAC spending - all purchases go through funding requests (anything over $500 must go to the staff committee and discuss)
  and all staff requests go through Maryanne
- PDS Focus (Positive Behaviour Support) - behavioural expectations for hallways, bathrooms, assemblies, etc
- Code of Citizenship - New program “ERASE” (Expect Respect and Safe Environment) - this will be developed over the year
  and we will be apprised of progress throughout the year
- Earthquake Committee - Erin Pearson, Robyn Copp, Danielle Lewis - need help to organise earthquake kiosk - need to
  organise activity/comfort packs
- Leadership Team - patrols, lunch monitors, sign crew, PA crew and Green Team
- Extra Curricular - teachers not required to do extra curricular - meeting will take place to find out who will be going forward
  with extra curricular activities this year - Maryanne will do Cross Country -  swim team is a go ahead with Kimberly Christison
  (Mondays 3:15-4 $60 starting in October, after Cross Country has finished)
- Funding - Playground rebate is at the School Board office - will be released after the first meeting - unsure of total as of right
  now
- Aqua Fit for gr 4/5 and Chess - will go ahead this year

Treasurer’s Message (Sanci Solbakken):
- Explained how the funding request is presented at each PAC meeting
- Sanci will be looking for someone to shadow her throughout the year, as this will be her last year

Other Business:
-  Halloween Dance will be Friday before Halloween (26th?) - need 4 volunteers - Joanne Buxton and Erin Pearson to co-Chair
   the organisation team for this. Me-Kon Hayes, Alison Hoogland, Stacey Bell and Danielle Lewis will help as well.
-  Movie Nights - Angie Hill previously did it - need to speak with her to see if she will do it again
-  Josie Irish will be doing the BC School Fruit Program
-  Hot Lunch Program - Kat Rainsberry will not be able to do it this year - looking for new person to take it over
-  Jerseys - need to speak with Kimberly to find out the situation on these

Meeting begins at 6:36 (in computer lab for presentation)

Maryanne Trofimuk's Technology Presentation:
- Maryanne showed us the computer lab and thanked PAC for the upgrades that were funded last year.
- When Miss Glenn returned to Australia, she left Rogers her LCD which is currently set up in the computer lab.
- There are 3 other LCDs in the school, which are in various classes, and will rotate through the other classes as
the year progresses.
- Maryanne suggested that the school really needs Smart Boards and more LCDs for the classes.
- Maryanne's home has crashed so she had not posted anything on the Rogers blog over this last week.
- Kristen Reed apprised us of her work on the website, which is still a work in progress.
- Maryanne showed us the Ministry of Education website Education Plan.

- Maryanne spoke of how the grade 4 classes were introduced to FAS (Foundation Skills Assessment) training

this week and spoke of how quickly they absorbed the information on the computers.
- 20th birthday of Rogers this upcoming Monday. There will be an assembly (all welcome). Maryanne recently
met with a committee of students to discuss what is great about Rogers and what Rogers future holds appeared
to be based around technology.
- Strawberry Vale and Wishart schools are high on the technology scale. Discussion about where Rogers is with
regards to their technology and what we need to do to bring ourselves up to date.
- Maryanne spoke of the test project last year (Digi-pals) where Ryan Nast's class and a class at Strawberry Vale
did Skype-type meetings with each other. It was a lot of work and the kids loved it.
- Kat Rainsbury asked Maryanne what her dream for the school would be. Maryanne said that she really wanted
to get Smart Boards in each of the classes and more LCDs.
- Colleen Westhaver presented the question that if the PAC funded one Smart Board, would the teacher who was
awarded it to keep in their class, would they be willing to share it with other classes. All agreed to this.


PAC Meeting Resumes at 7:16pm.

Presidents Message (Alison Hoogland) / New Business:
- Big announcement - Playground money will be refunded back to us by the BC Government. Announcement was
seen on TV for those schools who did their own fundraising, monies would be rewarded back. $24,000 will be
returned to our school.
- Bottle Drive only brought in $800 (normally we get $1200 or more) in January. Alison asked if we could put
$500 towards Bolivia. Agreed by all.
- Movie night raised $424.
- Kristin Reed asked that PAC minutes be forwarded to her to put onto the blog. Maryanne asked that she
receive these as well.


Treasurer Message (Sanci Solbakken):
- Gaming Grant has come $6,440 (non curricular spending)
- Sanci handed out account summaries and totals were discussed
- Sanci discussed how there have been a large amount of NSF cheques over the years. Asked that we could
make it policy on cheques is if families are NSF more than two times, it will be cash only payments

- Concerns over the amount donated for charities etc. A lengthy conversation went around the table discussing
how the percentages are flexible but that they should be agreed upon in advance so we automatically know
who gets what when fundraising takes place.
- Colleen Westhaver mentioned the Thrifty's Smiles Cards. It's 5% of what you load your card. Last payment
received was $18 but that was for the months before Christmas. Still waiting to receive that payment which is
predicted to be a good amount.


Vice Principal's message (Naomi Hazon):
- Naomi spoke of how Literacy week is in two weeks time. Assembly and Book Character Day have been previous
themes. This year we will have a local author come to do a presentation to the lower grades and older grades.
Carol McDougall is a suggested local author that we would like to have come visit K – 2’s. Glen Lovett would
come to present to the grade 3-5’s.
- Various ideas were discussed. Trivia, read 10 minutes a day, Drop Everything and Read
- Discussion of another Book Fair


Funding Requests:
1. Kimberly Christison has requested, via email, funding for new jerseys for the sports teams. $2,500 promised from back in June. This was approved.

2. Naomi Hazen has requested funding for both authors to come into the school with a total of $547 + $300
Teacher on Call (TOC) for Carol McDougall. Discussion revolved around the concerns of approving TOC costs.
End of discussion resulted in PAC paying for all except for TOC cost.

Other Business:
- Round table discussion about concerns about the lack of field trips, when other schools going ahead with them
despite the teachers strike.
- Kat Rainsbury discussed lunches for next session of hot lunches: La Fiesta, Subway or Pizza
- Sushi fundraiser will be done for the Sea Aquarium

Maryanne wrapped up the meeting:
- FSA testing will be running this week.
- 16th Monday is Rogers 20th birthday - Assembly at 10:45. Parents welcome - suckers and balloons
- Kindergarten registration Jan 30-Feb2nd
- Grade 5 Transfer information
- Ready Set Learn (Naomi and Maryanne doing everything right now as teachers are not able to participate)
requesting help from the PAC - set up for Wednesday 25th 9:00-1030am 8 stations, school tours, etc.
