_______________________________________________________________________
Started meeting off with a presentation by Maryanne and members of
the Garry Oak Ecosystems Recovery Team (www. goert.ca) to discuss
why the ivy was taken down from the two main outer walls of the
school. The ivy was ‘invasive’ in nature and was seen as a threat of
choking the Garry Oak ecosystem that thrives in, around and on
Christmas Hill Park, which closely neighbours the school. Artist Joanne
Thomson has kindly offered to create a mural on one of the walls, at a
‘reduced rate’ as the ‘Goert’ is one of her passions.
This presentation was to support a funding request of sorts, although
we were unable to establish a start-up cost from Ms. Thomson. An
approx. $650.00 estimate would be needed from the School Distr. to
‘prep’ the wall. As of this evening, the total approximate cost of the
Mural project would be 4500.00. More info can be found on the
Roger’s Blog. rogersmuralproject.blogspot.ca

Meeting Minutes
February 5, 2013

Present: Kelly Shera, Sanci Solbakken, Camilla Birtwistle, Emma Chalifour, Kristin
Reed, Alison Hoogland, Erin Pearson, Mike & Annette Brown, Maryanne
Trofimuk
Next meeting: April 9, 2013, 6:30 – 8:30pm, Staff Lunch Room

I.  President’s Message

Approval of previous PAC meeting minutes: motion to accept – Alison Hoogland,
seconded by Camilla Birtwistle, all in favour.

January bottle drive raised $671.40. Half the proceeds going to Bolivia and 10% going to
United Way. Amount raised at bottle drives continues to drop and The Bottle Depot will
not pick up if the amount drops below $500. The January flyers should have mentioned
that some of the proceeds were going to charity. Future possibilities are pairing up with a
radio station and/or the Saanich News.

We should look into getting a digital sign for the end of the driveway at Rogers Ave.

Monks would like to know if we will be ordering school supplies through them. Alison will
look into whether or not we can combine online ordering with paper orders. Another
company that offers less expensive supplies was suggested by Maryanne.

II. Principal’s Message

Grade 5 transition February 14th – 22nd .

34 children registered for kindergarten for September 2013.

A contract for new student agendas has been signed. They are less expensive and much
better quality.

February calendar:

  •  Floor hockey jamboree
  •  Fire drill
  •  Family Day and Pro-D day gives us a 3 day week.
  •  Feb 14th – Red & White Spirit Day
  •  Feb 27th – PAC Lunch – last Pizza Day (Alison Hoogland will organize Booster Juice for the remainder of the school year)

Green Team is entering an essay contest to win $25,000 computer lab.

Spring Break is 2 weeks which is then followed by the Easter long weekend.

There is now an ERASE (Expect Respect And Safe Environment) Resources button on
the blog. Allows anonymous reporting of bullying as well as resources for parents.

The new jerseys are here. They will be kept in a locked box and must be signed out.
They are not to be laundered by parents.

The equipment room is getting messy and the teachers would like to see transparent
totes. The PAC agreed that relabeling the existing totes would be more prudent. Alison
and Kelly volunteered to inventory the equipment and re-label the totes.

The invasive ivy is being removed from the school walls. A mural will be painted to
replace the ivy. An “Idea Grant” is available for funding for up to $2000. Emma Chalifour
volunteered to write the grant proposal with Maryanne.

Funding requests:

  • Bowling – grade 2 & 3 -$4/child totaling $452.
  • Zumba – grade K – 3 -totaling $857.

III. Treasurer’s Message

$24882.00 returned for fundraised playground money was given to school.

School was given $12000 by PAC. Every class now has a document camera,
LCD display and speakers. The teacher’s wish list from last year has been nearly
fulfilled. Future plans include buying laptops for each class (at $40 each).

PAC will get cheque for $12882 from the school.

Gaming money needs to be spent. There is approximately $12000 to be spent plus the
playground money.

We need a philosophy on how the PAC wishes to spend its money. This will be
discussed at the next PAC meeting.

Bowling for gr 2-3 was approved. Alison Hoogland motioned to approve, Erin
Pearson seconded the motion and all were in favour.

Zumba will be put on hold until more information is received regarding this
funding request.

IV. Meeting Close

There will be no meeting in March due to Spring Break.

May 14th is provincial Election Day so May meeting will be moved to May 7th .

April PAC meeting will include elections for PAC positions.
